Intern with one of the largest independent soil sampling businesses in the U.S. learning all aspects of soil collection services, soil characteristic identification, and soil condition assessment for the agriculture production community. Soil sampling is an important component of precision agriculture, a sustainable agriculture practice that also helps farmers contain costs by knowing the condition of the soil and what amount of fertilizer or other treatments need to be applied.

Most soil sampling is done by hand out in the field. Participants use all-terrain vehicles to go to the collection site based on a pre-determined grid. Data from the samples is used to provide farmers with a map to illustrate nutrient results for each field.

Skills to be learned may include:

  • Learning software 
  • Taking samples in the field
  • Compiling and inputting data and inputting into software
  • Creating grid maps from data for farm use
  • Operation and maintenance of machinery
  • Observing business practices of sustainable agriculture and economics
