An equine veterinary technician works alongside an equine veterinarian to provide care to horses. Specifically, an equine veterinary technician may provide nursing care, collect specimens and perform lab procedures, obtain medical histories, prepare for -and assist during - surgeries or medical procedures, and help educate horse owners. An equine veterinary technician may not diagnose a horse's illness, prescribe medication or perform surgery.
Placements are provided in throughout the U.S., but primarily in Kentucky, to increase the knowledge and skill level of the trainee in the field of veterinary medicine. Placements are for 5-6 months with a January start date. These placements fill up by early December. Strong English language skills required.
Skills to be learned may include:
- Daily routine of a veterinary hospital
- Administration of IV fluids and medication by IV and IM injections under supervision
- Assist with ultrasonography and radiographic procedure
- Assist with foaling
- Assist with artificial insemination and embryo transfer in breeds that permit this
